‘I wish I could believe in myself ’
We live in a time of endemic low self-esteem. People with low self-esteem think poorly of themselves, judging themselves to be less than others. Affecting almost any aspect of life, it prevents them from living the way they want to. But self-esteem is a state of mind, and how we think about ourselves can be challenged and changed.
Although we cannot change our past experiences, as we slowly begin to befriend and believe in ourselves we discover that we can change the way we relate to those experiences. This gives us the freedom to love and accept ourselves more fully, and to identify and create a better future.
What causes low self-esteem?
There are many reasons for this problem. It may go back to traumatic or dysfunctional early years, or be associated with a stressful life situation, like an abusive personal or family relationship, or bullying in the workplace.
Can things really change?
There are some things you can do by yourself to improve and manage your self-esteem. For example, being aware of and avoiding negative self-talk, connecting with people you love and being mindful of a self-care routine. However, if this is not enough, talking with a professional can help you to understand, work through and change your unhelpful and debilitating self image. I have helped many people in this situation.
Remember, that person in the mirror who has been through so much is still standing.
