Making Change Positive
Change is a given – a normal and important aspect of our life. Just when we are getting comfortable transition occurs; there is something about life that refuses to let us be complacent. Nevertheless, it is well understood that we humans are incredibly resistant to change — being fixed in our ways feels certain, safe and secure.
Sometimes we initiate the transitions in our life, but others are unexpected and even unwanted — we might experience these changes as quite dramatic and difficult to deal with. Life transitions are challenging because they force us to let go of the familiar and face the future with a feeling of vulnerability. External life transitions may lead to personal ‘internal’ changes. We may have to let go of who we think we are; of old attitudes and beliefs that no longer serve us.
Navigating change
Despite the challenges, a change can be a good time to explore goals and values. Take advantage of the crossroad in your life by remembering your hopes and dreams. Reestablish how you want your life to look.
While going through this process, allow yourself to feel anxious; even angry or numb. It is not uncommon to lack self-esteem while navigating change, but try to accept that it is a normal aspect of life. Keeping some routines consistent will give you something to hold onto, but every change brings a loss and it is important to make some space to grieve the loss, whether it be a person or relationship, place or position, or maybe your self-identity.
