Depression is more than feeling unhappy or sad for a while
We all feel blue from time-to-time. Depression is different. It doesn’t last for just a couple of days — the symptoms persevere, making the person feel overwhelmed, miserable or hopeless for weeks or even months. We don’t fully understand what causes depression, but we do know that sustained life stresses can put us at risk. Challenging relationships, ongoing difficult work situations and chronic health issues can contribute to the onset of depression. The good news is you can recover.
What does depression look like?
Depression is an illness with real mental, emotional and physical symptoms. It affects different people in different ways.
For example, you may experience:
- Ongoing feelings of sadness, emptiness or hopelessness
- Increased restlessness or irritability
- Sustained loss of interest in things you used to enjoy and/or withdrawal from family and friends
Physical symptoms range from feeling run-down and tired all the time to sleeping badly and a change in your appetite.
When should I seek help?
It’s very important to understand that depression isn’t a sign of weakness or something you can ‘snap out of’ by ‘pulling yourself together’.
If you are experiencing some of these symptoms and are worried or don’t seem to be able to shake them off then it is important to seek professional support.
