Taking the first big step with getting help
People use drugs and alcohol for many reasons – to relax and have fun, to socialise and to cope with problems. Sometimes they seem the perfect escape, or the best way of dulling pain.
Even though we know using substances won’t make problems go away, the need for respite overrides our judgement. Unfortunately, this is a strategy that often makes things worse, adding new problems to the mix. Becoming dependent on drugs in order to cope, rather than getting help or finding positive solutions, can create longer term problems.
